Envirothon

The Canon Envirothon is an annual competition in which winning state/provincial teams compete for recognition and scholarships by demonstrating their knowledge of environmental science and natural resource management. The teams, each consisting of five high school students from participating US States and Canadian Provinces, use their training and problem-solving skills in a competition centered on five universal testing categories (i.e., soils/land use, aquatic ecology, forestry, energy sources and wildlife) and a current environmental issue. This year, Sexsmith Secondary School had two teams that participated at the provincial level. The senior team, which consisted of three grade 12 students, and two grade 11 students, and the junior team, which was comprised of one grade 11 student and four grade 10 students. The competition took place on April 25th, 26th, and 27th this year. The first day was a field day, where we hiked along a ski trail and saw eight presentations. The second day started with a 3 hour exam, and a scenario that we were given to talk about the next day. The third and final day was a presentation and the judging, where the winner would be decided. The winning team would have the opportunity to go to Arizona for the final competition. The senior team this year came in fourth place. The junior team ended up in second place, and each team member received one hundred dollars. The senior team consists of: Danita R., Angelina S., Sara T., Antonio M., and Mary R. The junior team consists of: Justin S., Carli T., Laura G., Skyla B., Ashlee S. The coach: Mrs. Gillman-Oltmanns |
