French

French

French as a second language is a highly successful approach to second language learning - an effective way for students to become functionally fluent in French within the cirriculum guidelines set out by Alberta Education. This program is designed for students whose first language is not French. The objective is fluency in French, as well as an understanding and appreciation of the French culture. To help add to the French language experience, there are two travel opportunities for students enrolled in French; a trip to Montréal and Québec City in grades eight and nine, and an overseas trip to France in grades eleven and twelve.

The French as a Second Language program at Sexsmith Secondary School offers a variety of courses and provides maximum flexibility in conjunction with the full secondary school program. Course offered include French 7, French 8, and French 9 in junior high. In high school, students continue on with French 10, French 20, and French 30. In addition, students taking French for the first time in high school may opt to take French 13 (beginning level French) and then continue with French 10, 20, and 30.

The French program at Sexsmith Secondary School has been very successful, with former students acheiving marks at the top of their classes in the Grande Prairie Regional College French program.
