Extra-curricular Activities
Sexsmith Secondary School offers a wide range of non-classroom activities that take place during the noon hours, after school, and on weekends. Volleyball and football take place during the first two months of school. Recreational curling begins in November and basketball starts in January and lasts about twelve weeks. Competitive badminton runs from March to May. Track and field training begins in the late spring. High School teams usually practice on Mondays and Wednesdays after school. Junior high teams are slotted in on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I.S.C.F., yearbook, and Drama clubs operate throughout the school year. The school also has an active SADD (Students Against Drunk Drivers) club.
Insurance
Accident insurance is made available to students at a reasonable cost. Application forms for this type of insurance will be distributed at the beginning of each school year. Students active in athletic activities are encouraged to have adequate insurance.
Lockers and Locks
The care of personal property is each student’s responsibility. Students will be assigned a locker with a lock on it. Replacement cost for lost locks is $5.00. Students are not given a locker if they have outstanding fees or books that have not been returned to the library. The lockers in the physical education change rooms should be used to protect valuables during Phys Ed; students should bring their own locks for use during class time. As Sexsmith Secondary School has been designated as a drug dog training site, lockers will be searched from time to time.
Lunch Break
During the lunch break, activities have been set up for those students who stay at the school. Nutritious meals are available to students from the cafeteria at a reasonable price. Any profits generated by the cafeteria are used to support school activities. Senior High School students may leave the grounds at this time, however all students are encouraged to participated in one of the noon hour activities such as intramurals or the Computer club.
School Fees and Book Rental
Textbooks are supplied to students in exchange for a rental fee. The money collected is used to replace textbooks as they wear out. With decentralization, the schools are now responsible for collecting this fee and if there are shortfalls, Sexsmith Secondary will have to take the money from other student designated budgets. Students who choose not to pay their fees will not be assigned a locker the following year until their fees are paid. In addition, those students who are in arrears may not be allowed to enroll in high-cost programs such as Foods, and CTS Labs. Grade 12 students will not be allowed to participation in graduation ceremonies until fees, fines, and outstanding debts are paid in full.
Student Parking
Those students bringing vehicles to school have the responsibility of driving in a safe, courteous manner. You are urged to be particularly careful near bus loading zones, the arena, Sexsmith Elementary School, and other areas where people are walking. Students are encouraged to park in the student parking lot at the front of the school facing the street or on the street in front of the school.
Telephones
One pay phone and one office phone are in place for student use. The office phone will only be available before classes in the morning, at noon and after school. The main office phones are too busy to handle personal student calls. In cases of emergency, messages will be accepted and relayed to students. |
